The National Hockey League awarded an expansion franchise to South Florida and H. Wayne Huizenga on December 10, 1992. Bob Clarke was named the franchise's first vice president and general manager on March 1, 1993. On April 19, 1993, Bill Torrey was hired as team president and the club was officially named the Florida Panthers.

The Florida Panthers selected goalie John Vanbiesbrouck with the first pick of the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft and then picked 23 other players. They then picked forward Rob Niedermayer with the team's first ever Entry Draft pick.

On Oct. 6, 1993, the Panthers tied the Blackhawks 4-4 at Chicago Stadium in the franchise's first ever regular-season game. Scott Mellanby scored the first goal in franchise history. On Oct. 9, 1993 the Florida Panthers won their first game, beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 on the road.

The Panthers played their inaugural home opener at Miami Arena on October 12, 1993 and lost 2-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in front of 14,372 fans. On March 31, 1994, the Panthers tied New Jersey 3-3 and earned their 74th point of the season, the most ever by a first-year team. They ended 1993-94 with a 33-34-17 record (83 points) under coach Roger Neilson - the most successful season ever by a first-year NHL team.

Bryan Murray was named general manager in August, 2004. On June 8, 1995, Roger Neilson stepped down as the team's first coach and less than two months later, Doug MacLean was hired to replace him. On Oct. 8, 1995, the most memorable season in franchise history began with the famous "Rat Trick," which set off a phenomenon. Mellanby scored two goals in the season opener after killing a rat with his stick in the dressing room prior to the team's 4-3 home win against the Calgary Flames. Vanbiesbrouck dubbed Mellanby's feat a "Rat Trick" and within weeks, fans began tossing rubber and plastic rats onto the ice in celebration of goals. The Panthers finished the 1995-96 regular season fourth in the Eastern Conference with 92 points, then beat the Boston Bruins in five games, the Philadelphia Flyers in six games and the Pittsburgh Penguins in seven games to reach the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Panthers were swept by the Colorado Avalanche 4-0 in the finals. On Nov. 24, 1997, MacLean was fired as coach and replaced by general manager Bryan Murray. Since then, the Panthers have also had Terry Murray, Duane Sutter, Rick Dudley, Mike Keenan, John Torchetti, and most recently, Jacques Martin as head coach.

The Panthers last made the playoffs the 1999-00 season. Their other two postseason appearances were 1995-96 and 1996-97. Entering the 2007-08 season, their six-season absence from the postseason was the longest current streak in the NHL - matched by only the Columbus Blue Jackets. On June 24, 2000, the Panthers made one of the most memorable trades in franchise history, acquiring goalie Roberto Luongo and forward Olli Jokinen from the New York Islanders for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha. But on June 23, 2006 the Florida Panthers made what many claim is their biggest trade. Luongo and defenseman Lukas Krajicek were sent to the Vancouver Canucks for winger Todd Bertuzzi, defenseman Bryan Allen and goalie Alex Auld. The Florida Panthes play at BankAtlantic Center.

  21. Florida Panthers deep in net with Theodore, Clemmensen and Markstrom

When the Panthers broke training camp in October most NHL analysts picked them to repeat as bottomfeeders of the Eastern Conference partly because they would be depending on veteran goalie Jose Theodore coming off a shaky season and backup Scott Clemmensen instead of a consistent Tomas Vokoun.
